It has high levels of essential amino acids such as methionine and lysine, and it also has a good balance of unsaturated fatty acids, certain minerals (available phosphorus), and vitamins (A, D, and B-complex). The use of fishmeal is usually restricted to 5% to 10% of the content of poultry diets.

The quality of different feedstuffs is greatly dependant on the amino acid profile in their proteins, digestibility of the proteins, freshness of the raw materials, and their storage. Plant-based proteins, even when properly processed, are usually not as digestible as fishmeal; and their inclusion rate into the diet is often limited as it results in depressed growth rates and feed intake. Over-all protein digestibility values for fishmeal are consistently above 95%. In comparison protein digestibility for many plant-based proteins varies greatly, for example, from 77% to 96%, depending on the species of plant.
High quality fishmeal provides a balanced amount of all essential amino acids, phospholipids, and fatty acids (e.g.,DHA or docosahexaenoic acid and EPA or eicosapentaenoic acid) for optimum development, growth, and reproduction, especially of larvae and brood stock. The nutrients in fishmeal also aid in disease resistance by boosting and helping to maintain a healthy functional immune system. The fish meal is a limited resource and it is anticipated that the world production will reach a maximum level of about 1.1 million tons. Feed formulation for African catfish

1.Feed formulation for Catfish

4.Feed Formulation for Grass Carp Feed
Formulation 1 : Rice bran 40%, wheat bran 38%, bean cake 10%, fish meal 10%, yeast powder 2%. The feed coefficient is 1.9. If a part of the green fodder is added, the feed coefficient is 2.2.
Formulation 2: Corn flour 70%, fish meal 10%, bean cake powder 15%, wheat bran 15%, other material (based the total material metering) can be: sweet potato powder 12%, salt 0.5%, growth substance 2%, calcium hydrogen phosphate 2%. The feed coefficient is 4.8.
Formulation 3: Green hey powder 40%, cottonseed cake powder 30%, bean cake powder 10%, rapeseed meal 5%, powdered silkworm pupae 5%, fish meal 5%, barley powder 5%. The feed coefficient is 8.
The feed formulation can be adjusted according to local condition. Normally, two essential amino acids which are often supplemented in the feed are methionine and lysine. For the nursery stage (5–20 g), the protein level in formulated feeds is about 30–32 percent, this value decreases with increasing fish size, the lowest value (22–26 percent) occurring at a size of >500 g. Similarly, the lipid level of the diet changes with fish size appropriate to the requirement, which varies from 4–6 percent. Furthermore, calcium and phosphorus may be added to the diets. The diet is usually formulated from local ingredients such as fish meal, trash fish, soybean powder, soybean cake, rice bran, broken rice, cassava flour, bone meal etc.
